Gannon President Receives Highest Honor
University of Minnesota presents Epsilon’s Archon Antoine M. Garibaldi with prestigious alumni award
Archon Antoine M. Garibaldi recently was honored by the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development. On May 31, Archon Garibaldi was presented the University of Minnesota’s Outstanding Achievement Award, conferred to graduates or former students who “have attained unusual distinction in their chosen professions or in public service, and who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership on a community, state, national, or international level.”
The Outstanding Achievement Award is the highest non-degree honor that can be bestowed on a University of Minnesota alumnus. The award is granted by the University’s Board of Regents. He was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award during a luncheon in the Coffman Memorial Union in Minneapolis from Steven Yussen, dean of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development; David Johnson, Garibaldi’s former Ph.D. adviser and educational psychology professor; and The Honorable David Larson, a regent of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. Archon Garibaldi earned a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1976 and earned a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in sociology from Howard University in 1973. Archon Garibaldi is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and is also the author of ten books and monographs and more than 70 research articles and chapters. In 2004, Archon Garibaldi received the Howard University Alumni Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement in the Field of Education.
Since Archon Garibaldi’s July 2001 appointment as President of Gannon, a Catholic, diocesan University, the University’s reputation has increased as a result of several notable accomplishments. U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” consistently ranks Gannon as a Top Tier Master’s I Comprehensive University. This year, Gannon also ranks ninth in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. In addition, the University has also raised more than $16 million, or 54 percent, of a $30 million comprehensive campaign goal. Archon Garibaldi is actively involved in leadership positions in higher education and serves on many national boards including: Chair of Council of Independent Colleges; member of the American Council on Education’s Board of Directors; University of Saint Thomas (Minnesota); and the NCAA Division II Presidents Council. Archon Garibaldi is also very active in the Erie community where he serves as Board Chair of the United Way of Erie County, and several other civic, medical and education boards.
